Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Although usually affecting the portion of the small intestine known as the ileum the condition is not limited solely to the small intestine and can affect any area of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus.
Severity varies-only a small area of intestine is affected in some people, while others suffer from widespread intestinal inflammation.

Crohn's Disease is chronic, although it may go into temporary remission, it eventually flares up again.

Most diagnoses are made between the ages of fifteen and thirty-five, but people can develop Crohn's at any age.

The exact cause of Crohn's disease has not been established. However, it is theorized that bowel inflammation may occur as an abnormal immune system response to an intestinal virus or bacteria. At this time, it is unknown whether this abnormal immune response is the cause or the result of Crohn's disease.

Although diet may affect the symptoms of Crohn's disease, it appears unlikely that diet is responsible for the onset of the disease.
Crohn's disease is not contagious.

Crohn's Disease appears to be hereditary.

Chronic diarrhea with abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, and a sense of fullness in the abdomen are the most common symptoms. About one-third of people with Crohn's have a history of anal fissures (linear ulcers on the margin of the anus) or fistulas (abnormal tube-like passages from the rectum to the surface of the anus).
In addition to these symptoms, Crohn's disease may be associated with complications, the most common of which is intestinal blockage. The inflammation caused by Crohn's disease can thicken the walls of the intestine, which narrows the intestinal passageway and may result in a blockage.

There are other complications that may occur. They include deep bowel ulcers, nutritional problems such as vitamin, calorie, and protein deficiency, as well as malabsorption (the inability to absorb nutrients in food). Arthritis, skin problems, inflammation of the eyes or mouth, and kidney stones or gallstones has also been found to be complications of Crohn's disease.
