Endometriosis is a disorder that occurs when cells from the womb, called endometrial cells, are found outside the womb. The cells attach to other organs. Why it occurs is not known. Many women have endometriosis without knowing it. Twenty percent of women in their teens to their 40's have this problem.

The cells in endometriosis react to a woman's menstrual cycle by growing and bleeding. While this is normal for the cells within the womb, bleeding also occurs in those cells located elsewhere.

The cause of endometriosis is unknown though there are a few theories that suggest possible causes. One theory suggests that during menstruation, some of the menstrual tissue back up through the fallopian tubes into the abdomen where it implants and grows. Another theory indicates that it is a genetic birth abnormality in which endometrial cells develop outside the uterus during fetal development.

Pelvic pain, which feels like period pain, is the most common symptom of endometriosis.

The symptoms can vary, with some women having no symptoms at all, while others have severe pain. The pain usually occurs around the time of a period, but in some women pelvic pain can be constant.

It may be felt on one side of the body, in the middle or on both sides. Some women find that sexual intercourse before or during a period is painful. There may also be changes to periods, such as a small loss of blood before the period is due (spotting), irregular bleeding or heavy periods.

Endometriosis on the bowel or bladder may cause swelling of the lower abdomen and pain when going to the toilet, or blood in the stools during a period. Symptoms of endometriosis often disappear during pregnancy or after the menopause. In some women, difficulty becoming pregnant is the first sign of endometriosis.

Symptoms associated with amenorrhea may include headache, visual loss (in rare cases of pituitary tumor), marked weight gain or weight loss, dry vagina, increased hair growth in a "male" pattern (hirsutism), voice changes, and breast size changes.
