GOLDEN TIPS FOR ANTI-AGING - NUTRITION

Healthy eating isn't reserved for the young. Eating nutritious foods helps you feel more energetic regardless of your age. Use the info in the tips below.

Eat Well:

Avoid fatty meals & junk food.
Eat 5-7 portions pr. day.
Plan regular meals for the day and try to avoid so much snacking. If it is a must to snack try things like fruits and vegetables instead.
Make a good breakfast your main stay.

  1. Garlic and Onion family: The Allicin in garlic lowers the bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and raises the good HDL cholesterol in blood. It drops blood pressure levels, boosts immunity and has antibiotic properties. The evidence for combating cancer is still inconclusive.
  2. Cabbage family: Members of the Brassica family (cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli, Brussels sprouts) can stand guard against disease.
  3. The beta-carotene, indoles, glucoinolates and isothiocyanates (found particularly in broccoli) in these vegetables may prevent certain cancers.
  4. Oily fish: Such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, lake trout, contain omega-3-fatty acids. These help protect against heart attacks by making clot formation less likely. Omega-3-fatty acids also protect against diabetes, cancers, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases like arthritis, psoriasis and ulcerative colitis. Aim for 130 grams of fish at least 2-3 times a week.
  5. Leafy greens: Like spinach, fenugreek, amarnath, lettuce, parsley, celery, are a good souce of beta-carotene. Some of them also provide calcium, iron, folic acid, vitamin C and nutrients. Gluthione, active ingredient in spinach safeguards against cancer.
  6. Soya products are rich in calcium and plant estrogens, help prevent osteoporosis, menopausal discomfort, heart disease and discourage the growth of hormone related cancers - breast and prostate and may protect against others. The best sources of soy are tofu, soymilk, humus and meat substitutes.
  7. Papaya: Papaya is rich in enzymes, which aid digestion. These like all other yellow/orange fruits and vegetables - pumpkin, mangoes, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe - are full of Beta-carotene and vitamin C.
  8. Olive/Rapeseed oil: Too much of any fat is always bad, but replacing saturated fats with unsaturated, especially monosaturates is beneficial.
  9. Olive and rapeseed oil are both rich in monosaturates

  10. Apples/Grapes/Cherries/Strawberries: The soluble fibers in apples lower the blood cholesterol, lower blood pressure and stabilize blood sugar. These fruits contain ellagic acid thought to fight cancer by blocking an enzyme used by cancer cells.
  11. Tomato Products: Tomatoes are high in lycopene, an anti-oxidant which reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis by lowering bad LDL cholesterol; helps to prevent cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, cervical and digestive tract and may inhibit macular eye degeneration, a common form of blindness in the elderly. Lycopene is best absorbed from tomatoes processed as juice and sauce with a tiny amount of oil added.
  12. Fiber: Is found in all plant foods and can help fill you up, keep you regular, and reduce your risk of heart disease and colon cancer. The recommended amount of fiber is 20 to 35 grams per day and should be a mix of soluble and insoluble. Beans, oats, oranges, strawberries and apples are especially high in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps reduce blood cholesterol and helps control blood sugar levels.
  13. Insoluble fiber is found in wheat, corn, potatoes and the skins of fruits and vegetables. Insoluble fiber helps maintain regularity, prevent diverticulosis and hemorrhoids.

  14. Chilles/Peppers: Chilies stimulate the stomach's defenses; the may protect the stomach from alcohol and other irritants, helping to prevent ulcers and cell damage. Capsaicin, the stuff that gives chillies their fire, is an antioxidant, which can neutralize free radicals.
  15. Citrus fruits: These fruits are packed with vitamin C, bioflavonoids and limonene being studied for its effects on breaking down carcinogenes (cancer causing substances) and stimulating cancer fighting cells.
  16. Green tea: Green tea may have anti-cancer effect. (Contains Polyphenols and catechins)
VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Vitamin E: This is important to help ward off heart disease.

Vitamin D: The body needs This to help it absorb the calcium.

Vitamin B-12: This helps to build red blood cells. Many elderly need to get weekly shots so that they can maintain healthy nerves.

Vitamin C: Deficiency may present with symptoms of lethargy, fatigue, bleeding gums and delayed wound healing. Encouraging the consumption of Vitamin C rich foods may be the most effective way of improving vitamin C status of the elderly. The current recommended allowance is 60 mg for both men and women over age 51 years, with an increase to 100 mg/day in cigarette smokers.

Zinc: This mineral helps the body's immune system, which can be affected by aging as well.

Potassium: This is important to help with high blood pressure and can be depleted by some of the medications used to treat it.

Antioxidants help prevent oxidation, may help increase immune function and possibly decrease risk of infection and cancer. Antioxidants exist as vitamins, minerals and other compounds in foods.
Vitamin C, E and Beta-Carotene are good antioxidants, as well as, magnesium, selenium, copper and zinc.

OTHER THINGS

Exercise:

Make some form of activity for at least 30 minutes a day. Choose some activity you like - it will make exercise more enjoyable.

Benefits of strength training:
1. strengthens bones
2. increases muscle size and strength
3. reduces disability
4. decreases risk of falls
5. increases walking speed and endurance.

Aerobic exercise and strength training are two separate types of exercise that provide quite different beneficial effects. Aerobic activities such as walking, biking and swimming require moving large groups of muscle thousands of times against small amounts of resistance.
Strength training moves small groups of muscles a few times against increasing resistance. Aerobic activities improve cardiovascular fitness‹heart health and circulation‹and boost metabolism, but have little effect on strength or muscle mass. The best way to maximize fitness is to pursue a combination of both strength training and aerobic activities.

Get enough water:

Drink plenty of fluids including at least eight glasses of fluid every day to help prevent dehydration. Choose water often, and moderate your intake of caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine is a diuretic that will cause you to lose fluid. Drink more water, milk and fruit juices.
Two-thirds of your body is made up of water. That means it is the most vital nutrient needed. Water plays many roles in keeping you healthy. It helps to digest food so you can absorb the nutrients you need. It gives you an important source of minerals like magnesium and calcium. Water moistens mucous membranes and lubricates the joints and cools the body through perspiration.

Constitipation:

A tendency for constipation is another problem as person ages. The digestive system tends to become somewhat sluggish, which can cause constipation. To help stay regular and avoid constipation, drink at least eight glasses of water daily to help your stools stay softer.

Take life less seriously:

Laughter - one of the best things in life. Take life less seriously. It will make you feel great.

Get enough sleep:

Everyone feels better & seems to function better when they have had enough sleep. 6 to 8 hours id fine.

Dental check-ups are important:

Good oral health is part of overall good health. Flossing 3 times daily when you brush your teeth keeps teeth & gums healthy. See your dentist every year.

Medical check-up:

Annual check-ups are important. Having one pretty well ensures any problems that exist will be discovered early.

Don't drink too much:

Reduce alcohol. Red wine is said to be good protection against heart disease. One glass of wine for women, a maximum of two for men daily would look after getting the protection wine may offer.

Reduce stress:

The evidence is in. Being stressed for long periods of time can hurt your health, it can cause illness, and it could shorten your life.

Reduce/avoid smoking:

Stop or reduce smoking. Every cigarette shortens your life by 14 minutes. The number of people under 70 years of age dying from smoking-related diseases exceeds the total figure for deaths caused by breast cancer, AIDS, traffic accidents and drug addiction.

Exercise for the mind:

It is important to exercise our minds, to keep the brain in top shape. Use it or lose it!

Keep a low body-weight:

It is important to keep a low bodyweight. If you are fat, you will die earlier!
