Kidney stone

Subjects:
INFORMATION

The kidneys are the master chemists of the body. There are two of them, one on either side of the spine under the lower ribs.
Each kidney is about the size of your clenched fist. They are reddish brown in color and shaped like kidney beans.

A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. Kidney stones may contain various combinations of chemicals. The most common type of stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. About 70% to 80% of all kidney stones are composed of hard crystals of calcium oxalate, insoluble phosphate salt, or both.
These chemicals are part of a person's normal diet and make up important parts of the body, such as bones and muscles.

A less common type of stone is caused by infection in the urinary tract.
This type of stone is called a struvite or infection stone. Much less common are the uric acid stone and the rare cystine stone.

Kidney stones can appear in the kidney, ureter, and bladder.
Kidney stones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball.

Gallstones and kidney stones are not related. They form in different areas of the body.
If you have a gallstone, you are not necessarily more likely to develop kidney stones.

WHAT CAUSES KIDNEY STONE

The exact causes of kidney stone formation are not completely known; however some experts believe that stones are the result of mineral supersaturation and crystallization in the urine. Heredity, environment, age, sex, urinary infection, diet, and metabolic diseases are probably involved in stone formation.

The primary known causes is:

1) Diet with excess oxalates, calcium, and vitamin abnormalities, e.g., Vitamin A deficiencies, Vitamin D excess.

2) Urinary infections.

3) Inadequate urinary drainage.

4) Dehydration and lack of sufficient fluid ingestion.

5) Foreign bodies in the urinary tract.

6) Metabolic diseases, e.g., hyperpthyroidism, cystinuria, gout, intestinal dysfunction.

7) Use of certain medications, diuretics that increase levels of uric acid.

SYMPTOMS

Kidney stones are one of the most painful disorders to afflict humans, and the most people in western countries will have a kidney stone at some point in time.

The sudden, intense, pain is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

The pain is usually concentrated on one side of the back but may also move into the stomach or down to the groin where it can result in stabbing pains.

They may cause scratches in the lining (mucosa) of the renal pelvis or the ureter. This leads to blood in the urine.
There is not always enough to be seen with the naked eye but a diagnostic test can detect it.

Frequent infections in the urinary system may be a sign of kidney stones.

TIPS AND SELF-CARE

- A simple and most important lifestyle change to prevent stones is to drink more liquids - water is best. A recurrent stone former should try to drink enough liquids throughout the day to produce at least 2 quarts of urine in every 24-hour period.

- Patients with too much calcium or oxalate in the urine may need to eat fewer foods containing calcium and oxalate.

- Avoid food with added vitamin D and certain types of antacids that have a calcium base.

- Patients who have very acid urine may need to eat less meat, fish, and poultry. These foods increase the amount of acid in the urine.
